Course description
Our General English course is available to study at four levels, according to your ability.
The General English course is available to study at four levels, according to your ability. You can study for a minimum of 5 weeks up to a maximum of 30 weeks. There will be up to 18 students in your class.
The course offers a combination of core modules and target modules, split into morning and afternoon sessions.
You will learn through:
- interactive, student-centred Tutor-led sessions which take place in dedicated teaching rooms on the University campus
- guided individual study tasks which you complete by yourself outside class times
- group and individual tutorials where you can discuss your work with your tutor

Morning sessions cover ‘core skills’ and focus on: listening, reading, writing, vocabulary and speaking, including pronunciation.
Afternoon sessions allow you to study target modules according to your level of skill. Topics include:
- British Culture and Communication
- Manchester People and Places
- Manchester Ideas and Innovations
This class is suitable for students who can communicate in simple everyday situations, and understand and use common words and phrases related to everyday life. You are already able to form simple written sentences and can understand short, simple spoken texts and interact in simple conversations about familiar topics.
This class will help you develop your confidence and key English skills, practice your pronunciation and build your vocabulary to progress onto the intermediate level of the General English course.
This class is suitable for students who can demonstrate IELTS 4.0+, B1+ or equivalent and can communicate quite confidently in more complex conversations in various familiar situations. You will be able to give your opinion and engage in a two-way discussion on a range of topics. You will be able to form connected written texts and participate more confidently in conversations.
This class will continue to develop your confidence and key English skills, practice your pronunciation and build your vocabulary to progress onto the upper-intermediate level of the General English course.
This class is suitable for students who can demonstrate IELTS 5.0+, high B1/B2 or equivalent and can communicate and express themselves confidently and naturally to engage in more complex discussions on a range of subject areas.
You will be able to express more complex ideas and produce more detailed text on a wide range of subjects. You will engage fluently in discussions, expressing your opinion and responding to other people’s ideas.
This class will help you continue to develop your confidence and key English skills, practice your pronunciation and build your vocabulary to progress onto the Advanced level of the General English course.
This class is suitable for students who can demonstrate IELTS 6.5+, high B2/C1 or equivalent and can communicate complex information with a high level of fluency in a wide range of different situations.
You will be able to confidently express complex ideas and viewpoints through detailed text and spontaneous, fluent speech.
