Make the most of the resources available to you.

The Open Learning Centre for Languages and Academic English (OLCLAE)

  • Explore OLCLAE's multimedia library - in person or via the catalogue.
  • Familiarise yourself with Computer Assisted Language Learning packages.
  • Get into the habit of watching films and TV programmes.
  • Join the Face-to-Face scheme to practise speaking in your target language.
  • Plan your visits to OLCLAE, write them into your weekly timetable, keep a record of your visits and what you have achieved in them.

Computer assisted language learning

CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) can support independent learning by:

  • making vocabulary or grammar practice more fun.
  • marking your work and providing feedback instantly.
  • explaining points of grammar.
  • providing audio-visual exercises pronunciation practice.
  • providing glossaries, hints and model translations.

Audio-visual resources

The OLCLAE Library stocks more than 5,000 feature films, TV dramas and documentaries. Most of these titles can be borrowed to view at home or in OLCLAE's multimedia or study areas.
