Support for postgraduate research students

PhD writing support

We offer tailored academic writing workshops to all PhD candidates, delivered through Faculty specific sessions to provide you with focused support.

We also offer a number of bespoke writing tutorials for all PhD candidates, which are delivered on a one-to-one basis to provide focused support for your writing.

Our writing tutorials are delivered online, via Zoom. You can normally access a maximum of one tutorial per semester.

To make an appointment with a tutor:

  • Complete the PhD Writing tutorial request form
  • Submit a sample of your writing to tutorials@manchester.ac.uk. Your writing sample should be between 900 and 1500 words.

PGR drop-ins

We are now offering a PGR Drop-in hour every Wednesday 11am -12pm online via Zoom.

Please email sheena.kalayil@manchester.ac.uk if you would like to drop in to discuss any aspect of writing your thesis.

We can advise you on how to get started with your writing and remain systematic, how to show your voice as well as modulate your critical stance for impact, how to improve flow and readability. We could look at a particularly difficult section and discuss how you can improve it.

Faculty-based workshops

We provide standalone workshops per Faculty (1-3 workshops of 1.5-3 hours, online) through your Researcher Development office.

These workshops offer a first-stop opportunity for discussion of the genre of a doctoral thesis – what does it look like, what are readers’ expectations and how can you make your writing more impactful?

Please contact ResDev@ds.man.ac.uk for more information.
