Developing interview confidence
This workshop is designed to develop students' confidence in answering interview questions. It raises awareness of what employers are looking for, helps identify examples from students' own experiences that can be used in interviews, and guides students to communicate these experiences effectively.
Throughout the session, students explore different types of interview questions, including competency-based questions, questions about strengths and weaknesses, and questions that focus on overcoming challenges. Participants learn how to structure clear and effective responses using practical frameworks and real-life examples.
The workshop practices using the STARR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflection), a widely used method for answering interview questions with confidence and demonstrating skills, achievements, and personal development. Students have opportunities to practise their responses and reflect on how to present their experiences effectively.
Students develop confidence in structuring answers that:
- demonstrate resilience and a positive attitude when discussing setbacks or challenges;
- identify and communicate their strengths and transferable skills;
- provide evidence-based examples of teamwork, problem-solving, and achievement;
- show alignment with the employer's values and genuine interest in the organisation and role;
- explain why they are a good fit for a role by linking their interests, strengths, and values to employer expectations.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have had the opportunity to develop confidence in identifying question types, highlighting their experiences, and implementing practical strategies to perform more confidently in interviews and recruitment processes.
