Saniya, an MA International Relations student from Kazakhstan, attended the Academic Support Programme at the University Centre for Academic English (UCAE).
Why did you choose the Academic Support Programme at the UCAE?
I am a foreign student, so the Academic Support Programme at the UCAE is very helpful in building confidence for academic study. A lot of students have problems in areas such as speaking and grammar, so the service can help to develop further language skills and break down barriers.
What did you find most helpful about the service?
When I arrived, I had some concerns in terms of academic study. The programme developed my language skills so I did not feel as many difficulties in my studies with regards to writing essays or attending seminars.
The Academic Support Programme provided compulsory knowledge in areas such as how to use references appropriately. I found this really helpful.
Is there anything that surprised you about the Academic Support Programme?
I was surprised when I realised that the Academic Support Programme provides academic writing tutorials for all students of different backgrounds. I found this part of the programme wonderful for foreign students who do not have experience in academic writing of this nature.
After checking The University of Manchester's website, I was surprised that we could use the Academic Support Programme to improve our writing skills on a one-to-one basis. This allows us to send assignments to receive feedback off a tutor in areas such as organising the structure of essays, which is really important in academic writing.
How has the service helped you and your future career plans?
When I go back to my country, I will work in the international department of the university, so it is very useful for me to understand and help foreign students who have problems with languages.
Any language difficulties I experienced on my main course I was able to ask and learn about during the Insessional classes.
Why would you recommend The Academic Support Programme at the UCAE?
I would recommend it to everyone who plans to study here.
It is common for people to not have the experience or skills to adapt to a new environment. The support programme will help you to make better use of your time, find friends and, most importantly, feel more confident.
